We've been both interested going to Japan and learning Japanese since...forever. It all started with Sailor Moon ten years ago. We started watching the show, started reading manga, started drawing and eventually, started to learn Japanese. I actually had applied for the EAP Japan program at my school, but the program I was specifically applying for was canceled. I still have my recommendation letters too!

With that said, my desire to visit Japan have not diminished. One day, Helen and I were talking about it, and decided that we should apply for the JET program. We can live and teach in Japan. In the email, she asked me if I was still interested and my response is "definitely yes." Going to Japan is one aspect, but I've also wanted to experience living on my own in a different place. I think it'll be an awesome adventure. Helen, let's go! After all these years of hoping and planning, I hope we will make it!

Randomness

Status: Resting
Quote of the day: Friendship is life's most treasured gift.

I just drove my mom to LAX. She's going to visit China for a month again. Here I am, all alone. It's quite silly but the thing my mom worry most about me while she is gone is...eating. She cooked enough food for me to last a week, bought bags of apples, oranges and grapes, and left me money to buy take out. She was going to buy me eggs to boil, but decided against it because she is afraid I can't boil eggs. This is really sad. My mom has no faith in my cooking abilities. She probably think I'd burn down the kitchen if I tried to cook, so she took the safe route.

Anyway, I just went to Las Vegas again a few days ago. It was really fun. Lawrence and I went around and applied for player's club membership at all the casinos. We are not gamblers or anything. In fact, the only game we really play is roulette. We got the cards because members receive special deals in the mail. I just hope my mailman doesn't try to kill me because I have so much junk mail...haha. I also subscribe to a lot of magazines, so that'll probably increase the mailman's urge to strangle me to death. Sad.

My friend Theresa recommended us to eat at the Paris buffet. It turned out very good. I love their desserts. They make the best tiramisu!!!

For some reason, everyone thinks I am Japanese. Even Japanese people. When we were at the MGM, a seemingly confused Japanese lady walked up to me and asked me if I can help her. I do understand some Japanese because I've always been interested in learning Japanese. Unfortunately, I don't know enough to help her. I felt kind of bad because she appeared very lost. I hope she did eventually figure out what to do.

Now on to school. I still have one more quarter left at UCI. I don't even know where I will be afterwards. The first thing I want to do before working is to travel. I want to visit all the Asian countries, then go on a Euro trip and finally visit the Americas. There are way too many places I want to visit. And oh, I just know I have to go to Turkey someday. I used to be, and still am, in love this manga series by SHINOHARA Chie called Anatolia Story. It takes place in the ancient Turkey. I love the series so much I even read the history about the Hittite Empire. It's full of adventure, intrigue and romance. I'm such a sucker for dramatic stories. Haha.

Lately, I've been Netflixing and Blockbustering so much DVDs and reading so much manga that I haven't had time to play any videogames. It's truly very sad. My friend Lorenzo said that it makes him and the games sad. Now I feel like I've neglected my PS2. Poor baby. I guess I will play some game later today after Lawrence arrives. He'll probably be working, so I'll just play my Star Ocean 3. It's been so long since I last played the game I can't even remember where I am. And I still need to finish my Harry Potter book. >.<;;

Anime Expo 2005

Status: Procrastinating
Quote of the day: None

This year is my fourth time at the Anime Expo. The only difference is that I got a press pass, and it's simply awesome. I remember how I used to line up for Masquerade tickets for like seven hours with my friend Michelle. One year, we even camped out on the side streets overnight for it. Although it was a memorable experience (and everyone ought to try it at least once), but it was also very tiring at the same time.

Lawrence and I stayed for all four days of the expo. Over all, I still love the Exhibit Hall the most because there were so much things to buy! Yes, anime/manga makes my wallet bleed! It's a money draining hobby but I just can't resist.

I didn't take a lot of pictures because I was either too tired from walking around or PMSing - dunno which one. The one time I felt like taking pictures was when we saw these huge fluffy anime creatures right outside of the Exhibit Hall. They were super big and cute! So here it is:

Aren't those creatures adorable? Too bad I don't know if they are from a specific anime series.

Oh yeah, I bought this totally wicked and awesome Death Note notebook and necklace set. Death Notebook is done by the same author and artist of Hikaru no Go. It's a really smart and twisted manga series. I'd like to see it in anime, but I think it will be too difficult because the story involves a lot of siturations where a character is thinking or analyzing. Since anime tend to be better with more action than thinking, it might turn out to be boring. However, I would suggest anime/manga fans to read the manga. It is really, really, really THAT good.

On the last day of the expo, which was July 4th, Lawrence and I went to Downtown Disney to watch fireworks. It only lasted about 20 minutes or so. Afterwards, we spent an hour sitting in the parking lot because there was so much traffic. People who were lined up to exit couldn't move at all. Some people just ate snacks while others watched DVD in their cars. It was a rather interesting experience.

Vegas Fun

Status: Full from eating too much
Quote of the day: None

It's so hot today! Actually, it's been hot for the past couple of days. Every time I go outside, I feel like I am walking into an oven. Since I don't have class today, I stayed home and read Harry Potter. I'll probably watch more episodes of Naruto later on, or finish my Blockbuster rentals. Anything is better than going outside and getting roasted.

I haven't had time to blog about my Vegas trip with my boyfriend, so I'll do it now since I have time.

Let's see, the trip was from June 22 - June 24, 2005, which is really about a month ago. Lawrence came to pick me up around 11:00 AM in the morning. We first had to go to Costco in Chino Hills because I had to exchange my digital camera. We both thought that Chino Hills was some rundown city with lots of street bums. Surprinsinly, it turned out to be a nice and quiet town in the hills. Unless, of course, we just happened to be in the good part of the city.

We started out around 12:00 PM and arrived in Las Vegas at little after 3:30 PM (if my memory serves me correct). The drive was pretty smooth, and we didn't stop to rest. So the first thing we did was to check-in at Imperial Palace and rest before we went anywhere else. That night, Lawrence and I went to eat at the Mandalay Bay buffet. Besides the obvious fact the Las Vegas is famous for it's casinos, it is also well known for it's many buffets. Anytime people mention about Las Vegas food, it's gotta be those buffets.

The next day, we went to visit the car show at Imperial Palace (the tickets came with our hotel package). Right in front of the exhibit, there was a small store that sold car related items. I found this little orange cone we had a good laugh over:

Lawrence joked that he was going to leave me in exactly six minutes (hmph!).

After that, we pretty much visited the different casinos (Mandalay Bay, Paris, MGM, Bellagio, Mirage, Aladdin, Treasure Island, Venetian, and etc) and played Roulette. This is actually the first time I went to Las Vegas since turning 21, and felt, for the first time in my life, that I can walk freely around the casino. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I were still being carded when we played. This is the bad part about being Asian. Everyone thinks we are underage.

Anyhow, Aladdin was the most friendliest place because we kept on winning while we lost at other places playing Roulette. I am definitely going back to Aladdin the next time I visit.

During the trip, we took a lot of pictures. Here's one of the Eiffel Tower:

After the first two days, we pretty much got tired of eating at buffets. Therefore, we decided to try something new and random. The final verdict was - Indian food. Both of us had Indian food before. We both knew that Indian resturant usually smelled like curry and everything tasted like curry. Fortunately, the one we found (I think it was at Treaure Island hotel) didn't smell like curry (not that I didn't like curry, I just preferred it didn't smell like it) and was pretty upscale. The place was nicely decorated, dim and lit with a few chandeliers and candle-lights on every table. Nice? Yes. Very nice, except for the name of resturant. The place was called, yes I am serious, it was called Gaylord (no offense intended). Here's the picture of the resturant:

The food there was a bit on the expensive side (it's Las Vegas after all). The taste? Let's just say that it tasted very interesting. I can't envision myself eating the food on a daily basis, so I'd say it was worth trying it for fun.

We drove back home around 1:00 AM, which was techinically June 25. The trip had been very fun, and we were already talking about another trip back to Las Vegas. If we do go, we are definitely going back to Aladdin to win some more at Roulette!

Digital Camera Madness

Status: Packing for Las Vegas
Quote of the day: None

I got my Canon PowerShot 100 four years ago for $499.99. During that time, a 2 megapixel camera was considered extremely powerful and advanced.

Four years later, I am looking at Casio Exilim EX-Z750 for $399.99, which allows one to take digital photos and make movies at 7.2 megapixel.

It seems as though technology is the worst thing to invest my money in. When I buy a program 8.0 today, version 9.0 would be out the next day with the same price tag.

Anyhow, my experience with buying this particular Casio digital camera has been horrible. For some strange reason, the Exilim EX-Z750 is out of stock at every store I go to. I looked for it for hours and days. When I finally found and bought one today at Costco, I was so happy I would have run across the street naked. Unfortunately, that's not about to happen because I discovered scratches on the camera's screen immediately after I opened the packaging. I desperately need to get the camera because I am leaving for Las Vegas tomorrow morning. I am now very angry and bitter and mad and want to burn down the house of the guy who sold it to me and said it is brand new. Obviously, someone had tampered with the camera. We are going to the store to exchange it tomorrow before heading off to Vegas. Hopefully everything will go smoothly. Hopefully they have it in stock.

Ugh. How crappy.

Flunking Classes + Stupid TA = Crappy Mood

Status: Finals make me sad
Quote of the day: None

This week is my finals week. I really, really hate finals. Finals suck. And oh, did I mention I hate finals?

I am doing horrible in my classes this quarter. It's one of those times when you know you are failing, but you just don't do anything to improve the circumstance. This is exactly what happened to me this quarter. It's incredibly ironic. I mean, I know I am doing badly in my classes, I didn't do much to change the situation, yet I feel extremely ill when reality sinks in. This is why I am feeling particularly crappy right now.

I had 2 finals today, and I flunked 2/2, which doesn't quite lift my already sinking spirits. In addition, I also had to do a project demonstration after the two finals. Our program couldn't run on the UNIX, so we had to move back to WINDOWS to run it. The whole set up took about an hour. I think our TA was not very happy about it, but at least he couldn't show it because I am sure he still wants to get paid and not fired from yelling at his students. Well, I could careless if he did get mad because he never smiled or showed any type of emotion anyways. I mean, when Lawrence tried to make conversation with him today, the stupid TA's response was either 'yes' or 'no.' Honestly, I think he is either anti-social, or has been hibernating too long in his secluded little office to know how to interact with human beings. I really don't expect him to give me a good grade. Oh goodie, another bad grade coming my way.

Hearst Castle Trip

Status: Tired from writing math proofs
Quote of the day: None

During my Spring Break back in March, I went to visit Hearst Castle with my friend, Lawrence (now boyfriend). I don't know why I am blogging about the trip now, since I went there on <st1:date year="2005" day="31" month="3" style="font-family:times new roman;">March 31, 2005</st1:date>.

It took us about 3 hours to drive there. The drive was fun, but so much dead bugs on the windshield! We can literally see them getting squashed, but couldn't avoid them. When we arrived at the castle, Lawrence even took pictures of the dead squashed bugs.

The castle had five different tours available. We took the first one out of the five because it was recommended for first time tourists. A bus took us up to the castle, as it was set atop the mountains. During the tour, I couldn't help but notice how much the entire place resembled the castle from Harry Potter (yes, I am a Harry Potter fan). The last place we saw was the huge indoor pool. It was so beautiful! The mosaic tiles were made of genuine gold pieces. The tour guide said, "Yes, you are stepping on gold." The entire tour took about an hour. Then again, it really was about 30 minutes, because we stopped often to take pictures or admire the scenery.

My friend, Erik, also came to the trip. We stayed over at his house for the night since he lived close to the castle (actually, his school is near it). He made us a very nice Japanese meal which included unagi (my favorite) and sukiyaki. We watched "The Grudge" that night. I had wanted to watch it with them because it was suppose to be scary. However, Erik and Lawrence were trying to lighten the mood by making fun of every scene and predicting the events. In the end, I didn't feel scared at all. Afterwards, we watched "Harold and Kumar" (White Castle), and it was SO hilarious. I didn't want to watch it at first because I thought it was going to be a 'stupid' show. It did turn out to be stupid, but also very funny. The characters all said the right things at the right time to make it stupidly funny. Bottom line is --- it worked.

By the time we went to bed, it was already around 4:30 in the morning. Unfortunately, I got the attack of the giggles, and couldn't sleep. I was giggling so much, I woke up Erik and Lawrence (not that they were actually asleep). They suggested that I take melatonin because it's suppose to help me fall asleep. Eventually I passed out, but I don't know whether it was because I was too tired from giggling or the melatonin took its effect.

Over all, the trip was a lot of fun. Now I want to go backpacking in Europe because my friend, Michelle, is there now and having so much fun. Too bad I still have to suffer through finals, and five weeks of summer school before I can do anything close to fun. Then again, I might end up finding a summer job.

First time at E3

Status: Just finished watching A Beautiful Mind
Quote of the day: . . .

I went to the E3 this year for the first time. It really was a lot of fun, but it was also very tiring trying to get through the crowd in the exhibit halls. Since I attended with a media badge, I ended up getting whole bunch of press kits. Before, I didn't know exactly what was included in press kits. Now I know. It's a bunch of high resolution game images, artwork and screenshots that are used for websites and press prints. The Square Enix kit included the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children trailer DVD (which is pretty awesome).

I got to play some demos like Onimusha 4, Fullmetal Alchemist 2, One Piece, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Batman, and etc. I really wanted to see more of Devil May Cry 4, but the trailer was very short. Oh yea, BradyGames and Prima were giving out free strategy guide books (any one you wanted, as long as they had it), but the line was too long and I was too exhausted to wait. Over all, I had a lot of fun. The only outrageous thing about it was that it was the first time I've ever seen a $40 (USD) parking fee. I suppose those parking lots are making banks from the E3 attendees...

It's been a while...

Status: Trying to study for my midterm
Quote of the day: I dunno.

Wow, I haven't blogged for a long time. She brought back tons of stuff for me, like purses, jewlries, clothes, accessories and more. I had planned to study for my midterms, but with all the unpacking and cleaning, my intention to study went flying out the window.

Now that I am finally settled in my room, my mind has been wondering around just how much I've missed my mom since her departure. I realized that I've always taken her for granted. Living with her all my life has made her presence as natural as the air I breathed. Although I was busy with school and work while she was gone, at night, I still felt very strange. For instance, even if my mother is sleeping and I am in my room doing homework, I know that someone is there in the house with me. With her gone, the house seemed extraordinarily empty.

I suppose these are the 'little things in life" that teaches us to cherish and love the ones who are with us.

Dubbed Anime is Horrible

Status: Tired
Quote of the day: "Wit is educated insolence." - Aristotle (384-322 B.C.)

Naruto just got licensed by Viz, and I am sure a lot of people are very very sad, annoyed and frustrated. As an anime/manga fan, I prefer subbed anime. Dubs are horrible. For instance, the dubbing from Slayers made me twitch as the voice actor continuously prounced Zelgadiss as Zelgodess! It makes me cringe every time I hear it. Now Naruto is being licensed, and my friend thinks it's the end of the world. I most definitely agree.

Anyway, I did a little Naruto test for fun and somehow ended up with Naruto (it's a mystery to me...).

My #1 result for the SelectSmart.com selector, The Naruto Character Selector!, is Uzumaki Naruto

Random Compliments

Status: Eating yummy food
Quote of the day: No quote today, brain cells have not yet been recovered.

Due to various reasons, I have to live on fast food or to-go food for 2 months. Like usual, I went to order to-go food at an Asian cafe called Ledo after school tonight. After ordering, I sat down on the chairs next to the register, and waited patiently for my food. I was bored, so I just watched people come in and leave. As these two guys were leaving, one suddenly turned to me and asked, "Hello, how are you doing?" I thought, ok, this is really random. So I replied, "Fine, thank you." (Generic, yes, I know. What else can I say?)

Then, out of the blue, he told me, "Your damned fine." I suppose it is a flattering comment. However, I just thought it was plain awkward. I guess it was probably because I was so tired and sleepy, and the random comment just kind of woke me up. Thank god they didn't just stop in front of me and wait for a response, because I'd probably have said something stupid. The only thing the two guys did was keep on looking back when they walked outside, but at least, they weren't next to me. What a random day.

Testing New Contact Lenses

Status: Not sleepy yet
Quote of the day: No quote today, brain cells are dead.

I just received my new CibaVision Night & Day contact lenses on Monday. Supposedly, these contacts can be worn up to 30 days without the need to take them out (even during sleep!). I've had them on for five days already, and it appears to be fine so far. My eyes do get a little dry, but that happens to my daily wear contacts as well. So some eye drops usually resolve the problem. I still don't think I can keep these contacts in for 30 consecutive days. However, since I am never afraid to try new products, I am just hoping for some good results (especially since I spent 100 bucks on them).

It's all Bad News

Status: Watching the news
Quote of the day: "His ignorance is encyclopedic." - Abba Eban (1915-2002)

I get home, I am tired, I eat and turn on the TV for news. I was hoping for good news, but all I get is bad news. President Bush is a simpleton, and Lakers Coach Rudy Tomjanovich suddenly resigns. President Bush is reforming social security that will cut guaranteed retirement benefits for younger Americans (i.e. us). Rudy Tomjanovich claims that he is taking medication in order to do his job, and his resolution is to resign in the middle of the season (after 22 wins, 19 losses). Perhaps the only good thing is that Phil Jackson is on the list of possible replacement coaches. Nonetheless, I believe it is time to turn off the darn TV.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Facetious!

Status: French sandwiches are yummy!
Quote of the day: "If a man does his best, what else is there?" - General George S. About a year ago, when I borrowed the first three years of Harry Potter from my friend, I was hesitant to read it. The books sat on my table for almost a month just collecting dust. Out of boredom, I opened the first volume, expecting to find some mildly intriguing tale for elemantary children. Oh boy, was I wrong. I was completely addicted after reading merely 3 pages! I am not sure what caught my interest first --- the witty writing style of J. K. Rowling, the fantastically imaginative setting of Hogwarts, or the simple pleasure I find in a magical world.

Some people believe that reading fiction is a temporary escape from the bothersome reality of life. This idea actually applies to my love for Harry Potter. When I feel stressed or tired from the everyday routines of school and work, all I need to do is sit down with a Harry Potter novel. To be honest, the child within me wishes that Hogwarts really existed. It would be nice to live in a world where I can simply zap away all my problems with a flick of a wand.

Being an avid reader of adult fiction, it seems almost childish of me to be reading Harry Potter. But now I am no longer skeptical to pick up child fiction for fear that I miss another author like J. K. Rowling.
And after I overdose on Harry Potter...

<img src="http://www.wxplotter.com/images/ft/dead.php?val=1678" alt="I am going to die at 85. Now, I fear no more. I have discovered the wonders of Trader Joe's snacks. They taste good, are reasonably priced, and best of all, they are low in calories. If anyone is a calorie-counting-health-conscious person like me, then you must try Trader Joe's Pita chips. Please do note that this is only my blog, not an advertisement for grocery stores. All disclaimers aside, TJ's Pita chips are just plain awesome, especially the cinnamon sugar flavored one. These pita chips contain 60% less fat than regular potato chips! Best of all, they are just as addictive and tasty. In fact, even more so than greasy supermarket potato chips that is full of animal fat and cholestrol.

Besides pita chips, TJ's also carry a variety of other yummy snacks that are completely low in calories/fat calories. I just bought a quarter of their Organic Soy Mocha Fudge ice cream, and it is absolutely delicious! It has only 150 calories / 30 fat calories (servings per cup). It is way less fattening than regular ice cream, and yes you've guessed it, taste awesome. Of course, I also love their cinnamon raisin swirl bread (90 calories, 10 from fat). I've been living on toasted bread for over a month, and I am still not tired of them! Also, TJ's pita bread makes a wonderful and healthy breakfast choice. To make it better, I eat it with a piece of fat-free Kraft cheese. Pour a cup of TJ's slim milk, and I am off to a totally healthy start for the day. And oh! TJ's Barbecue chicken pizza is a must have for pizza lovers like me. I also love Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Italian and Thai food, but for my daily diet, it's all about Trader Joe's.

Rain and California Just Doesn't Mix

Status: Taking a nice Friday afternoon break
Quote of the day: Rain, rain, go away, come another day (hmm...isn't this from a song? When I have to commute 50 miles to school, however, the rain is downright frustrating. Unfortunately, I am slowly loosing faith in them with each passing day. The championships were fun, the Big Four Dream Team was entertaining, and now it's a Kobe Bryant One-Man-Show. Ironically, Kobe is absent from the court due to injury. Kobe fans, please do not be offended by my comment. In fact, I have been a Kobe fan myself --- even after the whole I-cheated-on-my-wife-so-I-bought-her-a-huge-ring ordeal. However, the Lakers are just drowning in their own lake.

This year, so much changes have been made to the entire team. Phil Jackson is gone, the Big Four is no more and it's downright weird to see Shaq in a Miami Heat jersey (By the way, I really miss his free throws, heh). To be honest, it took me quite a while to adjust to the new team members and the new coach. The pre-season games were fairly good, and I was able to hold on to the faith I originally had in them. And today, I experienced a sudden but not completely surprising epiphany --- I am loosing faith. It's just so sad. Lakers loosing a game has become the expectation, and Lakers winning the game has become the miracle.

Painful Usernames

Status: Still up at 2:00 AM
Quote of the day: This lifestyle is unhealthy.

Creating a username can be a painful experience. Why? Because what you believe is the most unique, original, and even absurd username you can come up with --- may end up being taken already. This is the exact problem I ran into just a few seconds ago during the process of creating this very blog. Even the Japanese word 'hachimitsu,' which means 'honey,' was taken, and I thought that was unique enough. Appearantly, I was wrong.

And so I became desperate. My friend even asked me, "desperate for username?" Yes. For username. What did you think?

Since I love anything cinnamon apple-ish, I thought to myself, "Ok, let's just hope no one is strange like me." Well, thank goodness for my strangeness, because it wasn't taken! (*Gasp*). And so, welcome to my blog: cinnamon-apple.
